Graham Fuller on STRANGER THINGS

The film critic Graham Fuller compares Stranger Things and Bryan Forbes’ 1961 classic Whistle Down the Wind in the fascinating article “British intruders bring miracles to BAMcinemaFest.” Both films are feature directorial debuts, both involve an intruder discovered on private property, and both play at BAM next weekend.

From the article :

Burke (who photographed the film) and Eyal directed Stranger Things in a crisp realist style, favoring extremely tight close-ups that get under the skin of characters who are at first unfathomable. The nuanced performances by Collins (a major talent) and Akhtar (hilarious as the inept jihadist in Four Lions) fully bear out the directors’ belief in an actor-driven cinema.

**SPOILER ALERT** – Mr. Fuller describes details of the story that some viewers may wish to read only after seeing the film.

STRANGER THINGS at Karlovy Vary IFF

We’re thrilled to announce that Stranger Things will have its International Premiere at the 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic.

The film will show in the prestigious competitive section Forum of Independents, where films compete for the Independent Camera Award. Last year’s winner was Christopher Morris’ darkly hilarious Four Lions, which also starred our very own Adeel Akhtar.

In addition to being an amazing celebration of world cinema, the festival promises to be a star-studded affair: Dame Judi Dench will be presenting the opening night film (Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre), and actors John Malkovich and John Turturro and cult director/producer Monte Hellman will be in attendance.

Time Out says catch STRANGER THINGS at BAM

David Fear, Film Editor at Time Out New York, just posted this preview of BAMcinemaFest. We’re buzzing with excitement about the upcoming screening of Stranger Things at BAM on June 25 and delighted to read that he recommends catching Stranger Things.

From the article:

Stranger Things She (Bridget Collins) is a withdrawn young woman who’s putting her recently deceased mother’s things in order; he (Four Lions’ Adeel Akhtar) is a homeless man living in the late woman’s garden shed. That the two will eventually bond is a given, but it’s the way this British indie lets its kindness-of-strangers narrative develop slowly through long silences, small glances and the gentlest of exchanges sets that sets it apart from the usual two-handers. And casting agents need to take serious notice of Akhtar stat.
